Between March 23 and 27, 2026, the Portuguese Army, through the Directorate of History and Military Culture (DHCM), hosted the official visit of a delegation from the Directorate of Historical and Cultural Heritage of the Brazilian Army (DPHCEx). In this context, and considering the interest in providing guests with contact with notable examples of national historical-military heritage, a visit to the town of Almeida was organized.

The delegation arrived in the late afternoon of March 24 for dinner and returned to Lisbon on March 25 after lunch. The group included Major General António Cavaleiro, Director of the Directorate of History and Military Culture of the Portuguese Army; Brigadier General Almeida Júnior, Director of the Directorate of Historical and Cultural Heritage of the Brazilian Army, accompanied by his wife; Colonel Giorgio Trindade, Head of the Heritage and Cultural Projects Section of DPHCEx; Colonel William Megale, Liaison Officer for Culture and Doctrine of the Brazilian Army to the Portuguese Army; and Major Alexandre Carvalho, Head of the Planning and Coordination Division of DHCM.

During the short stay, the guests had the opportunity to explore the Fortress-Town through a carriage ride, the CIFAR — including a presentation of the Interpretation Centre and a ballistics workshop led by Mr. Joaquim Guedes —, the Solar de São João – Casa Memória, as well as the Almeida Historical-Military Museum.

Given Almeida’s historical and military tradition, it is our duty to honor the legacy that has been passed down to us, relying on the support of partnerships and institutions to continue this path. It is a great honor for the Municipality to promote and showcase the Fortress-Town, as well as its history and memory.
